Bird Calls on Red River Radio

Picture
Cliff Shackelford, PAS member and the statewide non-game ornithologist for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, hosts a monthly radio program on Red River Radio (the local public radio station) named "Bird Calls." The program normally (but not always) airs on the second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m., and those interested can also listen to past programs they've missed by visiting the archives online. Each episode Cliff provides information about a particular Texas bird species, addresses listener questions, and ends with a conservation tip. Listeners can call 800-552-8502 with on-air questions; they can also submit photographs or recordings of unknown birds to Bill Beckett at wbeckett@lsus.edu for Cliff to identify.

See more about the program by watching this YouTube video!

Great Backyard Bird Count at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center

For several years, the Pineywoods Audubon Society has partnered with the Pineywoods Native Plant Center (PNPC) to host the Great Backyard Bird Count in Nacogdoches County during the month of February. The Great Backyard Bird Count ("Bird Day") is a fun way for the whole family to be involved in citizen science, collect bird data in real-time, and learn more about birds. PAS members help with guiding bird walks around the PNPC, operate various kid-friendly hands-on activity stations (including the fun "Bird Olympics" games), count birds at the feeders, and help to provide snacks (very important for the kids who are enjoying the activities!). Staff at the PNPC work with the Stephen F. Austin State University Forestry Club to help with activities and make this rewarding event happen.

Information on this year's Great Backyard Bird Count will be featured on our News page and/or Facebook.

Photography

Several PAS members carry their cameras while birding and take excellent photographs that they publish online. Some are even featured throughout our website! Click the links below to see their photos.

      • This Flickr page includes the more common birds of the Pineywoods of East Texas that are listed in an online checklist published by Texas Parks and Wildlife in 2001. Only those species classified as abundant, very common, common or uncommon in this checklist are included to keep to a manageable size. Rather than combining all these 200+ species into one huge group, they have been subdivided into four galleries (defined in their respective descriptions at the beginning of each album): Waterbirds, Raptors, Passerines, and Others. Only breeding-plumage, adult birds are included: one image for species where the males and females are identical/nearly so, and both male and female images for dimorphic species.
